The Amendment
On 11th of August 2020, the honorable Supreme Court of India made a historic judgement thus amending The Hindu Succession Act of 1956, which denied a daughter to be the rightful and lawful heir to the family.
I am not a feminist (the so called trend) but this judgement surely is one of those decisions that could make a difference in India. A difference, yes, I don't mean the monetary perks (it is a part and parcel of this amendment) which according to me is the least important part here.
The difference I mean is this: The change in the thoughts certainly in everyone but most importantly "The Daughters of India".
If you ask me, how? Here we go…
We, the current generation fight boldly for gender rights, work ethics and humanity and equality in every aspect openly. But the older generations do not and that is where I feel the existence of social stigmas.
Women have this inferiority where they would rather be hurt literally thinking their brother has more rights on the parents, but certainly won't question it candidly. Certainly she would do anything for her parents but when there is this question between herself and her male sibling she would lower down the gear.
Why? Because this deep blemish in the minds of people in India, 'The Paraya Dhan concept'.
Amidst all the so called traditionally followed/accepted inferiority, the feeling of she being a rightful daughter always takes a back seat.
While this amendment was authored by a three judge panel, head of the panel Justice Arun Mishra stated:
“A daughter always remains a loving daughter. A son is a son until he gets a wife. A daughter is a daughter throughout her life”
This is what that makes a difference. The change in every daughter's thoughts. To every daughter who ever wanted to be there for her parents but was denied due to the social stigma, hear it out.
You! Yes YOU remain a daughter for life and no other role of you can overpower this fundamental right.
So this very righteously destroys the stigma. If the law identifies you as the heir, certainly and definitely you yourself can always allow yourself out of shackles of the stigma and shower the love you always wanted to without restricting yourself.
The traffic lights in Mumbai were installed with female figures too. Again why? It stands for the same reason, to bring about a change in the thoughts. Not only men but also women are meant for the outer world and to make the system 'Gender Inclusive'. This change begins from within.
The change needs to be infused in every mind in the nation.
Hear it out:
